Glorious Food Courts

The Food mall is a speciality in Singapore

Sometimes when I travel, I don’t really have time to taste the flavours of a country by visiting many restaurants within my short trip. So places like the food courts in Singapore are great for those who only have one day to take a bite of some of the 365 dishes that Singapore claims to have, and snacks from other countries as well.

At Takashimaya, Ngee Ann City, in the famous Orchard Road, the food hall covers almost the entire basement level. It’s packed almost all the time, especially with hordes of Snackers. One of my favourite snacks is the “World’s best Cream Puffs” Beard Papa from Osaka, Japan. You’ve never tasted a Cream Puff unless you’ve had a Beard Papa. The baked shell comes prepared, and they fill the special cream in for you right there, I believe it is a marketing gimmick to add to the drool factor, and for practical reasons – so that it is always fresh. Another snack that you shouldn’t miss, is the Taiyaki, a Japanese pancake shaped like a fish, filled with red bean paste…yes, I know it sounds strange, but the fish shape somehow lends a crispness and stronger frangrance to the dough, as compared to the round-shaped pancake – must be shape of all the fins and scales.

For the more adventurous, try Bee Cheng Hiang’s sweet meat. This snack is a huge favourite in Malaysia and Singapore especially during the Lunar New Year. This famous company started in 1933 in Singapore. They sell barbecued meat, bakkwa, which is mostly pork that has an unmistakable aroma – and no MSG. Their other famous snack is Meat floss – that’s right, meat has taken on another form – Floss. The locals eat this roasted and slightly crunchy snack with porridge or just as it is (but not on a stick).

Other foods include: TWG – famous tea and Macarons, Harrods teas, biscuits and chocolate, Royce chocolates, Polar cakes and a number of different bakeries selling a vast variety of pastries.
