Pancakes Anyone?

When in Chicago I stay at the  Sutton Place Hotel.

In general, I prefer smaller more intimate hotels and this one is a value for what it is. I was introduced to this SP by an interior designer friend who has clients in the Rush St. area. So, imagine my great surprise when I wandered across the street early one morning for breakfast at the Original Pancake House. You may know of this chain, but I didn’t, and was vamped by a single order of 49er pancakes and a side of bacon. These are thin and slathered with butter and doused with syrup.  OK, Rush St. also has Barney’s, Marc Jacobs and Hermes, so finding this odd little house that serves an excellent breakfast is just another great surprise. Oh yeah… they’re very generous with the coffee that packs a caffeine punch. All you can drink.

I think that one of the best breakfast places in Chicago is 11 City Diner (11th & Wabash). It is an old school Jewish Deli complete with a lox platter on a potato pancake, a salami and cheese scramble and yummy corned beef hash. But the best thing on the menu is the 11 City French Toast topped with fresh bananas and strawberries. It is a little south of the gold coast, but worth the trip.

There is a new gem in the city to stay – The Elysian Hotel. It is in the heart of the gold coast, the service is 5 star and the rooms are amazing! This one is worth checking out.
