Santiago—Chile’s Booming Capital

This article was excerpted from The Wall Street Journal’s Insider’s Guide to Santiago, Chile.

Set against a backdrop of Jagged, snowcapped peaks, Santiago serves up colonial architecture, impressive views, charming cafes and fresh fusion fare amidst a time of transformation. Clean-air initiatives have lifted a bit of the grit from the skies while economic growth brings new energy to its streets. Glossy skyscrapers have been rising in Las Condes, home to the continent’s only W Hotel. New galleries, boutiques and clubs infuse artsy vibrancy to once-depressed neighborhoods, including Bellavista and Barrio Italia.

Noi Vitacura. A modern-style boutique hotel with very clean design and a rooftop terrace bar and pool with spectacular views of the city and Andes. Close to posh stores and restaurants. Avenida Nueva Costanera 3736, Vitacura.

The Aubrey. Tucked at the base of Cerro San Cristóbal in the Bellavista neighborhood, this hideaway that mixes sleek, new and romantic old Santiago. Constitución 299-317.

Mestizo. This contemporary restaurant serves gourmand versions of traditional seafood dishes.  Avenida Bicentenario 4050, Vitacura.

Bar the Clinic. The lively bar with a bohemian feel belongs to the Clinic, a weekly satirical newspaper that criticizes mainstream politics.  Monjitas 578.

La Tranquera. Bakery with great pastries and empanadas. Avenida Italia 1294, Providencia.

Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. An incredible collection of Chilean and foreign art housed in a building from 1910. Parque Forestal s/n, Casilla 3209.

Maipo Valley. Try a day trip to the Antiyal and Pérez Cruz vineyards, each about an hour drive from the center of the city. They are small producers creating superior interesting wines. Antiyal Winery: Paine, Santiago Metropolitan Region; Viña Perez Cruz: Liguai de Huelquén, Maipo Alto.
